Don’t Die with Your Music Still Inside You

How can you live fully and wholeheartedly if you are still learning to be comfortable in your own skin?Terry Hershey

For Serena Dyer (daughter of Wayne Dyer) her father’s words, “Don’t die with your music still in you” has been the most important of her dad’s principles for Serena. To her, it means that you don’t allow yourself to live any life other than the one you were born to live.

Comfortable in Your Own Skin

My friend Terry is fond of referring to the notion as “being comfortable in your own skin.” Unfortunately, too often we play the music of others as if they somehow possess something special which is denied to us. In a conversation on stage Anne Lamott lamented something like, “We often compare our damaged inner selves with the rehearsed and brilliant external appearance of others.” A game that we are incapable of winning.

I heard a speech by Fr Greg Boyle who founded an organization (Homeboy Industries) solely devoted to the revolutionary transformation of Los Angeles gang members. He guides the transition from hopelessness to living lives of meaning and contribution to their community. He tells the story of a conversation. A young woman freshly released from prison with a tragic history of theft, violence, and selling her body just to make a living. Filled with shame and remorse she came to Fr Greg with an opinion of herself as an unworthy human being. His response to her was shocking: “In the eyes of God you are not unworthy. In fact, “YOU ARE PERFECT.”

You Are Perfect…Huh?

Each of us, in our own ways, often feel just like the young woman. But the truth is… in the eyes of love, you are perfect. Perhaps you are just trying to sing someone else’s song and therefore ignoring the beautiful music that is inside you.

Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh calls it self-love. Maybe our life is all about discovery. Discover your song. Sing it. Shout it.

But most of all, love it! And… fearlessly love yourself
