#14 Bobby X: The Transformation of a Skinhead

November 14, 2016 by Charlie Hedges − 0 Comments

My guest today is Bobby X. Right now, he is sitting across the table from me: shaved head, fully tatted body, wearing a wife-beater undershirt. To tell the truth, if you don’t know him he looks scary as hell.

But that scary guy is not the one we will chat with in this episode. Today, Bobby, is no longer a prejudiced skinhead but instead he is one of the accepting, loved and loving people I know on the planet. But it wasn’t always that way. That’s why I’ve titled this show: “The Transformation of a Skinhead.”

Before we chat with Bobby let’s take a look at his fascinating record.

  • He has been in prison and jail for more than12 years for serious felonies including drugs, possession of weapons, and assault and battery with intent to do serious harm.
  • He was a radical racist and basic hater of people. Fighting was just a normal part of life.

But it came to the point where he got sick of the prison and drug life, began attending a 12-Step program and changed his life around.

So let’s meet Bobby.

#13 Ryley Westman: The Next Chapter Begins with Your Mind

November 7, 2016 by Charlie Hedges − 0 Comments

IMPT NOTE: There is a significant statistical error in this episode. (See Below)

My guest today is Ryley Westman, the Coordinator of Instruction for the entire San Diego Padres Organization, from Rookie Ball to the Big Leagues.  Ryley is entering his 9th year coaching in professional baseball. In his current role a majority of his focus is put into developing young talent at the minor league level to help impact the San Diego Padres at the Major League level.

You will find no more continual growth and change than in the lives of professional athletes. Improving skills is obvious and never-ending. But the real difference-maker in the Great Player verses the Elite Player is what we call “Make Up,” or how the player is able to growing mentally, emotionally, and relationally.

Ryley Westman’s job is to help young and maturing athletes attain the fullness of their talent and their mental aptitude. Any sport is as much mental as it is physical, if not more. Riley teaches both.

You can reach Riley at rwestman@padres.com

Statistical Correction: I stated that of the 5000 players in the MLB Minor Leagues only 25 players will be called up to a Big League Roster. The more accurate fact is that it is 25 players per organization, therefore there are 5000 players competing for 750 roster spots. Of those 750 spots more than half are secured by veterans, leaving less that 250 spots available for the 5000 players in the Minor Leagues. It is a very challenging journey.

#12 Pam and Charlie Hedges: How Expectations Can Ruin an Experience

October 31, 2016 by Charlie Hedges − 0 Comments

This episode with Pam and Charlie really is about Change and Uncertainty because any time you travel to a foreign country, things rarely turn out the way you expect them to. Most of your expectations seem to get turned upside down, and are changed, like it or not. So? In order to have a great experience you learn to drop most all expectations and simply “go with the flow.”

Let’s start with some background. Pam and I have been in Italy for a little more than two weeks and have accomplished the foolish task of visiting 5 areas in that short time: We have stayed in Lake Como, Cinque Terre, Siracusa and Palermo Sicily, and finally Milan. And you know what? I’m about to keel over in exhaustion.

Pam and I are moderately experienced travelers and yet we continue to learn and grow with each experience. We plan to talk about some of that growth today.

Before I bring on Pam, I’d like you to know she is a Leadership Coach working with corporate executives, directors and managers. She plans all the details of our trips, while it is my job is to figure what we want to do once we get there. She’s a planner. I’m a curious learner. We make a great team.

#11 Molli Ezio: Family-Driven Life Changes

October 23, 2016 by Charlie Hedges − 0 Comments

Our conversation today is with Molli Ezio, who goes by Ezio. Ezio is co-owner of one of the most famous restaurants in Northern Italy named La Darsena. Located in Lake Como, it is about as far north as you can get in Italy. The setting here is enchanting?a lake surrounded by dozens of magnificent little breathtaking Italian villages. In fact, George Clooney, Richard Branson, and Mark Zuckerberg all own villas here.

Molli Ezio, has led an industrious life, owning 6 hotels and restaurants in Lake Como only to realize that a 16 hour work-day didn’t allow him to be the kind of father he wanted to be to his children. So he eventually downsized to just one restaurant and hotel, La Darsena in Tremezzo, Lake Como.

In this interview Charlie and Ezio talk about the importance of family from a personal Italian point of view. And then we discuss the constant seasonal changes required to operate a world-class restaurant.

Please note that English is Ezio’s second language. Sometimes communication between the two becomes an adventure in translation. All the more fun!

#8 Terry Hershey: The Certainty of Uncertainty

October 3, 2016 by Charlie Hedges − 0 Comments

Together again, Charlie and Terry discuss the fact that change and uncertainty are inevitable. Unpredictability and randomness are fertile grounds for creativity.

They use the book by Pixar’s Ed Catmull, Creativity Inc. as a starting point for the conversation. Pixar executive Ed Catmull does a great job of explaining the wonder of change and uncertainty in life and in any creative endeavors.

This conversation is not meant solely for artists, but for all of us as we go though life not really knowing what will happen next. It’s that “unknowing” that can bring out the best in each of us.

#5 Terry Hershey: The Art of the Journey

September 12, 2016 by Charlie Hedges − 0 Comments

Terry and Charlie spend the first 15 minutes in pure comedic recollections of past experiences. It is fun to listen to.

The remainder of the episode is a conversation about life and the Art of a Journey. Journey is merely metaphor, which if accepted, will change your life. It’s about both setting destinations and milestones but also attempting to maintain acute awareness of your present surroundings, situations and opportunities.

The Art of the Journey requires a change of mind about how you perceive your life. Your life is what you think it is. Why not try looking at your life as a journey that unfolds as you go along.
